AN
INTERVIEW WITH
THE WICKS:
M.C.Selfridge and Barb Richardson
Well,
it seems the wait is finally over girls. I understand you went into the
studio to record your first full-length cd. How did it go?
BARB:
It was great.
M.C. Yeah, it was way up there on
the thrill
list for me. Once we walked into the studio,
we didn't want to leave.
BARB: First off, it was great to reconnect
with producer, Steve Jacula who I worked with years ago at a local music
store.
M.C. Steve came highly recommended
to us, and we were really fortunate to have him on the project.
Tell
us about the CD. How long did it take, who worked with you on it, etc.
M.C.
We headed for the studio back in February, but we had anticipated this
CD for quite some time. We kind of graveled with the various ways we could
put it together, and found that the greatest decision was whether or not
we wanted to bring other musicians in on it with us.
BARB:
We wanted to remain true to our acoustic roots, but at the same time,
we were dying to hear what our work would sound like with additional instruments,
mainly bass and drums.
M.C. When we finally decided that
we wanted to
add other musicians into the mix, it was like an
artist having three or four new and wonderful colors
added to the palette. It just opened up all kinds of new ideas and became
a wonderfully creative project. Actually, the most creative project I've
ever worked on.
BARB: Definitely creative but challenging
as well. Laying down 13 rhythm guitar and vocal tracks in one session
was quite ambitious, but we rose to the occasion and made it happen. When
the other
musicians came on board, we stayed open to their ideas as well, and really
benefited from their talents.
The
name of the CD is "GIRL TALK", is that right?
M.C.
Yes. We thought it was quite appropriate...
BARB: since we're girls and we like
to talk.
M.C. That's right. We're talkin' all
about "it" on this cd. You know, the things that girls talk
about. Love, love, and oh yeah...love...mostly having it, losing it, finding
it, dreaming about it. We break away from that main theme from time to
time, but mainly we girls like that subject.
BARB: It's always a hot topic!
Tell
us about the other musicians on the CD.
BARB:
We really clicked with all the guys who played on it. They are all very
talented musicians, and it was a joy to work with them.
M.C. They were the kind of guys that
come in and you explain what you're hoping to get out of them, and then,
bam...they just do it. I really enjoyed all the different flavors they
brought to the cd. Bringing other musicians into the mix really broadened
our sound.
BARB: Yeah, I think our music already
shows a great deal of variety , but adding all the other instruments took
it to a new level. It's still sensitive music, but it has taken on a much
more powerful feeling.
What was your greatest goal with this CD?
BARB:
To
pay for my children's college. I'm hoping people buy at least two or three
each.
M.C. Oh at least
BARB: No, seriously, I think my greatest
goal was to just finally get the music out there. It's such a great feeling
to know that you've put together something that you can share over and
over again with people.
M.C. I totally agree. You know, it's
like making a great painting. The last thing you want to do after you
finish it is put it in the closet so no one else can enjoy it with you.
Like Matisse once said, "The joy is in the doing" which we really
found to be the case when we went into the studio. And, I think that the
joy is also in the sharing. We're very excited about others being able
to listen to our work without having to leave the comfort of their homes!
Or cars.
And,
I understand there is going to be a CD release party?
M.C.
Yes,
we're releasing "Girl Talk" on August
25th at Schubas in Chicago. It's a great place to hear live music,
and we're very excited about playing there.
BARB: We'll be singing most every
song from the CD
along with some old favorites of ours. We'll have other
musicians playing with us that night, so it's going to be a lot of fun.
M.C. And the CD will finally be for
sale! Yahoo. It's been a long time coming, but I think everyone will agree
that it's been worth the wait.
